ATHENS, Ga. - Take a bow, Ty Simpson. The first-year starting quarterback walked into Athens, Georgia, and did what 33 other teams couldn't do since 2019: defeat the Georgia Bulldogs.

While it wasn't Simpson's best performance as a starter, it certainly wasn't a performance to sleep on, with 290 total yards and three total touchdowns as Alabama defeated Georgia 24-21.

After the game, the Crimson Tide's signal-caller took time to appreciate what the win meant to him and to Alabama, which starts SEC play 1-0 for the 10th consecutive season.

"It's huge, man. It feels awesome. We're not done yet. It starts tomorrow," Simpson said after Alabama's win. "We have to go get Vanderbilt. That's a really, really good team. We know what happened last year. We have to get our minds right. This is a great win against a great team. We are going to see those guys again, hopefully. We just need to keep on trucking and make sure we don't lose intensity. It's playing with a chip on our shoulder. Alabama against the world. Us against the world.

"I wouldn't say it was a road monkey. I think we need to take it a game at a time, right? We had a special intensity about today, and we need to keep it going every week. Nothing changes. This was just a game in Athens, Georgia. Next week is a game in Tuscaloosa against a really, really good team. We are just trying to go 1-0 and understand that each week is a new week."

Alabama put the ball in Simpson's hands in several crucial points on Saturday, but the biggest came at the end of the game. Alabama had a third and five. A first down conversion meant Alabama wins. A stop gave the ball back to Georgia with a chance to tie or win the game. Simpson, with pressure in his face, delivered a pass to Jam Miller, and Miller slid down just past the first-down marker to seal the deal for Alabama. What did it mean to Simpson for the coaching staff to put that trust in him on such a big play?

"It feels great, you know what I mean. I think it goes back to our guys in general, right. We have been prepping that play all week. They gave us an advantageous look for it. The guys did a great job. Jam (Miller) did a great job getting out of the backfield. The offensive line did a great job selling it. I told them to give me the ball, but it was more about the guys up front and the guys around me."

He also showed praise to Alabama's defense, which came up with three crucial stops in the second half by forcing two punts and a turnover on downs to hold Georgia to just 21 points on the night.

"I mean, I am so proud of those guys, man. I know I am saying proud a lot, but I seriously am. We challenged everybody all week. We knew what happened last year. We knew we gave them life in the second half. We played complimentary football. Coach (Kane) Wommack and all the defensive stuff. Credit to them. Credit to Deontae Lawson. Having Time Keenan back was huge. They got stops when the offense needed them the most. That's how we play, right. We play complementary football. The offense, we didn't convert on a couple third downs, right. Flip the field position and trust our defense. I am just so proud of those guys and how they led and how they played. It's the mentality we are going to keep all season."

Simpson is now tied for the second betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy after Alabama's 24-21 win over Georgia. He'll lead the Crimson Tide next weekend as Alabama returns home to take on Vanderbilt on Saturday, October 4.
