Wilson Furr’s Record-Setting Day Leads No. 6 Alabama on Day Two of 2018 SEC Championship
Freshman Wilson Furr carded an Alabama freshman tournament record round of 7-under par 63 on Thursday to lead the No. 6 Alabama men’s golf team on day two of the 2018 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championship. As a team, the Crimson Tide climbed two spots to third overall heading into Friday’s final 18 holes of stroke play with a two-day total of three-over par 563 (283-280).
Furr’s mark not only set a freshman school record, but it also tied for the second-best round in both UA program and SEC Championship history. Former Alabama standout Bobby Wyatt owns both records when he carded a 61 during the second round of the 2014 league championship. Meanwhile, Furr’s 7-under par on Thursday tied for the seventh-lowest round vs. par in the UA record books.
Furr did not record a bogey in the second round, going 4-under on the front nine and 3-under on the back nine to result in his record-setting day. The Jackson, Miss., native enters the final 18 holes of stroke play in a four-way tie for second overall with a 36-hole total of 4-under par 136 (73-63), one stroke back of clubhouse leader Cecil Wegener of Ole Miss (135).
“It was obviously a good round today,” Furr said. “I felt like I hit the ball well during the first round but just struggled with my putting. Today, I hit it even better and was able to make putts. That got some momentum going and I just fed off that. It was cool to (set records) at a big tournament like the SEC Championships. I was just trying to help the team as much as I could, so it was a good day for sure.”
Two other Crimson Tide golfers are among the top-20 individuals as senior Lee Hodges and junior Davis Riley are in 12th and 18th place, respectively. Hodges finished the second round with a 2-over par 72 and is at even par 140 (68-72) for the tournament, while Riley is two strokes back of his teammate with a 36-hole total of 2-over par 142 (73-69) after carding a 1-under 69 on Thursday.
Senior Jonathan Hardee is in a tie for 50th with a 147 (69-78), while freshman Davis Shore rounds out the Tide golfers in 61st with a 150 (74-76).
Eleventh-ranked LSU leads the 14-team field with a 36-hole score of 3-under par 557, while No. 4 Vanderbilt is two strokes back of the Tigers at 1-under 559. Ole Miss, ranked No. 34 in the nation, is in fourth at 5-over 565, two strokes behind Alabama, while No. 9 Auburn rounds out the top five with a 6-over 566.
The top eight teams after 54 holes will advance to the match play portion of this year’s championship. The third and final round will take place Friday morning. The quarterfinals will tee off Saturday morning and the semifinals will begin that same afternoon. The championship match will take place on Sunday morning and will be televised live on SEC Network.
Alabama will tee off the second round at 8:10 a.m. CT (9:10 a.m. ET) off Hole No. 1 and will be paired alongside LSU and Vanderbilt. Live scoring throughout this year’s tournament can be found at www.Golfstat.com.
