Former Alabama Quarterback AJ McCarron Named New Head Coach of Birmingham Stallions
On Thursday, the Birmingham Stallions entered a new era in the USFL, announcing former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron as the team's new head coach following the retirement of Skip Holtz earlier in the week. McCarron, a Mobile, Alabama, native, had recently backed out of his decision to run for Lieutenant Governor in Alabama.

McCarron takes over a Birmingham Stallions program that has dominated in the USFL before the USFL merged with the XFL to create the UFL. The Stallions, which play at Protective Stadium in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama, won three straight championships, claiming the USFL titles in 2022 and 2023 before winning the inaugural UFL championship in 2024.
MCCarron played quarterback for the University of Alabama for five seasons, taking a redshirt year in 2009 before seeing meaningful reps for the Tide as the team's starter in 2011. During his Alabama career, McCarron threw for 9,019 yards and 77 touchdowns. He also added three rushing touchdowns to his collegiate career.
The Stallions will return to action in the spring to try to return to the championship pedigree that Holtz brought to Birmingham.
