Alabama Baseball defeats Samford to Extend Win Streak to Four
Alabama (30-12) defeated Samford (22-19) 13-6 in the home game back after sweeping the Missouri Tigers.
"This is the fastest to 30 wins since the 2006 season, so thats quite an accomplishment and its certainly not the end goal for the team but good win for us," coach Brad Bohannon said.
Alabama took the lead in the fourth inning after a single by senior Drew Williamson brought a runner home and a sacrifice fly by junior Dominic Tamez brought in another run to put the Crimson Tide up 2-0.
Alabama extended its lead to three after a solo home run by senior Ed Johnson in the fifth inning.
Samford fought back in the sixth inning to tie the game after a two-run home run by junior John Anderson and a solo home run by freshman Lucas Steele tied the game at 3.
Alabama answered back with a three-run home run by freshman Colby Shelton to put the Crimson Tide back in the lead 6-3. The home run by Shelton is his 16th of the season which sets an Alabama record for freshman. The record was previously held by Jeremy Brown (1999) and Ross Wilson (2008) at 15.
"Its a pretty cool accomplishment, not everyone gets to do something like that and I'm just happy to help the team win," Shelton said.
Johnson also helped the Crimson Tide score in the sixth inning with an RBI double to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Bulldogs would bring the game closer with a solo home run by sophomore Garrett Staton in the seventh inning to make it 7-4.
Alabama answered back with a sac fly by senior Tommy Seidl that brought a run in to put Alabama up 8-4 going into the eighth inning.
Samford fought back in the eighth inning to make it 8-6 after an RBI double by freshman Aaron Walton.
The Crimson Tide added some cushion to their lead in the eighth inning. The inning started with an RBI double by Shelton that brought in a run and a sac fly by Johnson that brought another run home. Following that, Seidl stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 13-6.
"[Mason McCormack] hung that slider like early in that bat and I just missed it and so I just didn't want to miss it again, I just tried to stay relaxed and just basically get the barrel on the ball and let the bat do the rest," Seidl said.
Alabama will take its four game winning streak to Baton Rouge, La. to face the LSU Tigers in a three game series this weekend. The first game of the series is Friday at 6 PM.
