Alabama Fends Off Texas Ninth-Inning Rally to Clinch 2-1 Win to Avoid Sweep
AUSTIN, TX — Alabama took game three 2-1 over No. 4 Texas to avoid a series sweep. The Crimson Tide’s pitching staff starred today, shutting down the Longhorns’ hopes of a ninth-inning rally with reliever Ashton Crowther picking up his first save of the season.

The Crimson Tide’s bats struggled again, failing to score more than two runs in any game this weekend. Alabama also recorded double-digit strikeouts in all three games, finishing the series with 49 strikeouts.
Just like in yesterday’s game, the Crimson Tide struck first with an RBI single through the left side from third baseman Jason Torres, driving home first baseman Luke Vaughn, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. This gave Alabama a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the second.
Alabama’s pitching was crucial in the game three win over the Longhorns. Freshman pitcher Myles Upchurch started and went 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit, no runs, striking out four, and walking three. With the win, he improved his record to 5-2 this season.
The Crimson Tide then turned to the bullpen, bringing in left-handed reliever Ashton Crowther to replace Upchurch at the top of the sixth. Crowther pitched the rest of the game, scattering three hits, allowing one run, striking out two, and walking none to earn his first save of the season.
Alabama added to its lead in the top of the seventh when right fielder Brady Neal hit into a double play. Fortunately for the Tide, center fielder Bryce Fowler advanced home from third to give Alabama a two-run lead entering the bottom of the seventh.
Texas attempted a rally in the final inning, as second baseman Ethan Mendoza hit an RBI single to drive home left fielder Anthony Pack Jr., who had doubled earlier in the inning. However, the potential game-tying runner was left stranded at first as Crowther retired the next two batters, striking out the final hitter to secure the 2-1 win for Alabama.
Alabama improves to 28-13 on the season and 9-9 in conference play after avoiding the series sweep. The Crimson Tide will be back in action next Tuesday, April 21, for their last midweek game at Sewell Thomas Stadium against UAB. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
