Alabama Football Position Battles in Scrimmage No. 2
A handful of position battles are happening along the Crimson Tide's roster during Fall Camp. With 14 days until the start of the season, where do things stand on some important positions for Alabama?
Running back is a position that, while Alabama feels good about the quality of depth, someone has to start at tailback. With the injury to Jam Miller, although DeBoer said he could have played on Saturday if he had to, Justice Haynes is the logical next man up in that room.
Haynes could potentially be the starter - he has the talent and ability to take control of an "RB1" role. I am still projecting Justice Haynes to be the starting running back for Alabama, and if he's able to get reps that Miller can not due to an injury, it could prove favorable for Haynes' chances to start against Western Kentucky.
It's not going to be easy for anyone to replace JC Latham at right tackle. The top-10 pick from the 2024 NFL draft left a (literal) big hole to fill along the offensive line. During the first few practices of Fall Camp, Formby had the 'starting' spot, with Elijah Pritchett commanding the left side ahead of Alabama-to-Iowa-to-Alabama transfer Kadyn Proctor. Proctor took that spot back just a couple of practices into Fall camp, allowing the battle at right tackle to kick off between Pritchett and Formby. Formby has been with the 'first' team during every media portion, but it's still a battle at that spot according to Kalen DeBoer, and a tight one at that.
"It certainly is [a battle]," DeBoer said. "that's going to be a position that, I think until we get into some game-time reps, I don't know if we'll have it completely ironed out just based on how it's gone so far. Both guys have their strengths and things they do really well, and those come out. It's not like either of them are a liability, I think it's just a matter of figuring out which one is our guy. They both have done a lot to earn a lot of reps."
DeBoer also said, "Maybe we take that back a week from now if something else continues to evolve or one guy really steps up, but that seems to be the direction it's heading right now."
Based on what we've seen during the media viewing portion, it would appear Wilkin Formby gets the first crack at right tackle for the Crimson Tide, and that's who I'll project.
