The Alabama women’s basketball team fell Sunday afternoon to Vanderbilt, 67-58, in Southeastern Conference play at Foster Auditorium. The loss drops the Crimson Tide to 12-8 on the season and 2-5 in conference play while the Commodores improve to 14-6 overall and 4-3 in SEC action.

“Vanderbilt made plays and we didn’t make plays,” said Alabama head coach Wendell Hudson. “We’ve got a chance, and what we’ve got to do is take advantage of that. Vanderbilt is a good team, but we’re a good team also. We just have got to finish some of those shots and believe. If we don’t believe that we can get it done, then we can’t get it done.”

Alabama was led in scoring by sophomore Daisha Simmons, who chipped in 15 points while junior Shafontaye Myers added another 13. The Tide was led in rebounding by senior Meghan Perkins with nine boards. For Vanderbilt, senior forward Tiffany Clarke led the game recording a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds.

Both teams started cold from the floor as neither was able to get above 20 percent for the first several minutes. With the Commodores leading 11-7, the Tide connected on back-to-back three pointers, one from Simmons and another from sophomore Brittany Jack, to pull in front, 13-11, at the 12:35 mark. The game would go back and forth over the next six minutes, before Vanderbilt used an 8-0 run to jump ahead, 28-21. Alabama fought its way back in, scoring the next eight straight, however, the Commodores would tack on the final five points of the half for the 33-29 edge heading into the break.

The second remained close as neither team led by more than four points until Vanderbilt pulled away late in the half, going up by as many as 11.

For the game, Alabama shot 32.8 percent (21-64) from the floor while Vanderbilt hit 43.6 percent (24-55) of its attempts. The Tide forced 27 Commodore turnovers, 14 of which came off steals. Vanderbilt out-rebounded Alabama, 49-29, and took advantage of its second chance opportunities, scoring 17 points compared to the Tide’s eight.
