Can Alabama Have Its Third Heisman Winner In 2020?

Alabama football is 36 days away from kickoff and appears to have another strong team with national championship aspirations but will the Crimson Tide have the best individual player in the nation?

Alabama has had two Heisman Trophy winners, Mark Ingram (2009) and Derrick Henry (2015). They are the only two non-quarterbacks to win the award since 2006, with two of the five Power Five conferences not playing, does that increase the odds that Alabama could win its third Heisman Trophy?

Mac Jones 16-1

Mac Jones is the most highly favored player on the Crimson Tide roster to win the Heisman. This makes sense, as he plays the key position to win the award, 37 of the 81 years the award has been won by a quarterback. Jones is the presumed starter for Alabama, he passes for 1,503 yards and 14 touchdowns in limited action last season.

Najee Harris 30-1

Najee Harris can become the third running back to win the award representing the Crimson Tide this year. He took over primary running back duties last season and has returned for his senior year to improve his draft stock. Harris has 2,377 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns in his career, he needs just over 1,214 yards this season to break the Alabama career mark for rushing yards.

Devonta Smith 50-1

Devonta Smith would become the first wide receiver to win the award since Desmond Howard in 1991. Smith has 2,109 yards receiving and 23 touchdowns during his Crimson Tide career. He had 1,256 yards and 14 touchdowns while sharing targets with two first-round draft picks, he should get the lion's share of the targets this season.

Bryce Young 50-1

The incoming freshman would be the youngest player to win the award but if he overtakes Mac Jones for the starting quarterback role he could pay off at the betting window. Young was the top quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class and has already been complimented by his coaching staff and teammates.

Jaylen Waddle 66-1

The junior wide receiver has electrified fans for two seasons on punt return and sporadic offensive touches while sitting behind a trio of highly-touted receivers. The departure of Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III should open up an opportunity for Waddle to see more consistent touches.

Trey Sanders 100-1

Trey Sanders was the No. 1 running back in the nation in the 2019 class and boldly declared that he would win the Heisman Trophy as a freshman. Sanders reportedly had a great summer in 2019 but unfortunately suffered a foot injury at the beginning of camp that cost him the entire season. Now healthy once again he will compete for carries in a crowded backfield, making him a longshot to win the prestigious award.
