Hypothetical SEC-Big Ten Challenge in College Football
The SEC and the Big Ten are at odds over scheduling, the College Football Playoffs, and which conference is the best. The Big Ten sits atop the college football world right now, winning the last three national championships with Michigan, Ohio State, and Indiana all downing an SEC team on the way to hoisting their title.

Blain Crain of Crane and Co. proposed an idea: let the Big Ten and the SEC send their top dogs to meet on a neutral field in week one. Indiana won the Big Ten, and Georgia won the SEC. Let them play on a neutral field in week one.
We took Blain's idea and expanded upon it. In college basketball, the SEC and the ACC have an annual challenge where each team plays each other. What would a hypothetical SEC-Big Ten challenge look like in college football this season?
These matchups are loosely based on last season's conference standings, with Georgia and Indiana matching up as the conference champions. The Big Ten also has 18 teams, while the SEC has 16, so last season's bottom two teams in the Big Ten standings (Michigan State, Purdue) were left off for this current exercise.
Indiana vs. Georgia
The Dawgs and the Hoosiers won their respective conferences last season, with both defeating teams viewed largely as conference powerhouses (Georgia defeated Alabama 28-7, Indiana defeated Ohio State 13-10). This matches up two of the top teams in the sport over the last two seasons, with Kirby Smart and Georgia winning three of the last four SEC championships, while Indiana has made the playoffs each of the last two seasons.
Ohio State vs. Texas
We're fortunate enough to get this matchup this season, with Ohio State going to Austin, Texas, for a night game against the Longhorns in week two. These two matched up last season too, with Ohio State defeating Texas 14-7 in Columbus. This season's matchup appears to feature more offensive firepower and seems like it will be a higher-scoring affair.
Oregon vs. Alabama
Somehow, with both these teams being national title contenders, Alabama and Oregon have never played before. Oregon has played Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer during his tenure with Washington, with the Huskies going 3-0 while led by DeBoer. The Ducks and the Crimson Tide would be must-see TV and would bring home huge ratings.
Michigan vs. Texas A&M
The Aggies and the Wolverines are two teams that pride themselves on defense, with Michigan boasting one of the best defensive lines in the country; Texas A&M is led by defensive-minded Mike Elko. Texas A&M's high-powered offense led by quarterback Marcel Reed would provide appointment television against a pass rush as fierce as Michigan's.
Southern Cal vs. Ole Miss
USC and Ole Miss both boast offensive weapons and high-powered quarterbacks with Jayden Maiava (USC) and Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss). Both teams were effective running the ball last season, and while the quarterbacks would generate the hype, the run game could be the determining factor in who wins this one. An added storyline is that Lane Kiffin coached both these programs, and both fanbases could unite in their mutual hatred for their former head coach.
Iowa vs. Oklahoma
These might be the two best defenses in their respective conferences, but the Sooners boast an air-raid style offense, led by offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer. Even still, Iowa knows how to mitigate powerful offenses, with annual matchups with Ohio State on the schedule. Iowa took Oregon to the wire last year in Kinnick Stadium, and the Sooners' offensive struggles might lead to this game being a low-scoring affair.
Illinois v. LSU
Illinois is a team on the rise in the Big Ten, while LSU failed to live up to the hype last season but is on an upward trend with Lane Kiffin leading the program. Both Bret Bielema and Kiffin deliver viral quotes to the media, and this matchup would certainly provide its fair share of quips from the former Arkansas coach and the current LSU coach.
Minnesota vs. Missouri
In terms of name recognition, these two teams may not be at the top of the SEC, but they both feature first-round talent in Gophers quarterback Drake Lindsey and Tigers running back Ahmad Hardy. Which future NFL draft pick can carry their team to a victory in the Big Ten SEC challenge?
Washington vs. Tennessee
Washington has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Demond Williams, while Tennessee features a high-powered Josh Heupel offense that has averaged over 35 points per game in four of the five seasons Heupel has been there despite having four different starting quarterbacks. This game would probably be the highest-scoring affair of the 16 matchups.
Nebraska vs. Vanderbilt
It's a matchup of old school and new school, with Nebraska a powerhouse in the 90s but now searching for modern-day relevance, while Vanderbilt has been largely irrelevant prior to the last two seasons. This season, both Vanderbilt and Nebraska are hunting to rebuild after last season, with Nebraska adding offensive linemen and a quarterback via the transfer portal, while Vanderbilt signed a five-star true freshman after flipping him from Georgia. Cohesiveness will be a major concern for both teams early in the season.
Northwestern vs. Kentucky
Both teams are historically bottom feeders in their conferences in football, but new quarterbacks (Aiden Chiles at Northwestern and Kenny Minchey at Kentucky) and new head coach Will Stein at Kentucky have left both programs optimistic about the future. If either coach can win big games, they'll set themselves up for major success.
Penn State vs. Florida
Both teams overhauled the rosters and coaching staff after disappointing seasons last year. Penn State hired Iowa State's Matt Campbell and brought in Iowa State QB Rocco Becht, while Florida hired Tulane's Jon Sumrall and poached offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and quarterback Aaron Philo from Georgia Tech. Both programs hope to return to their previous stages with their new coaching staffs.
UCLA vs. Auburn
We were going to get a home-and-home between these two teams before it was cancelled, with both programs featuring new, exciting offensive minded coaches from the G5 level after UCLA hired JMU's Bob Chesney and Auburn hired South Florida's Alex Golesh. Former Tennessee signal-caller Nico Iamaleava will man the helm for the Bruins this season while Byrum Brown leads the charge for Auburn as both teams are looking to return to bowl eligibility, as neither has made one in the last three seasons.
Rutgers vs. Mississippi State
Two teams that many won't consider part of the conference championship race this season, Rutgers and Mississippi State both feature electric playmakers that, if they can take over a game, could lead their teams to victories they otherwise wouldn't have gotten. KaMario Taylor and Anthony Evans III at Mississippi State and KJ Duff and Antwan Raymond at Rutgers can be headaches for teams overlooking the Bulldogs and the Scarlet Knights.
Wisconsin vs. South Carolina
Both teams had success in the 2010s but have been on the outside looking in on the conference race in recent history. Two coaches are on the hot seat: Luke Fickell at Wisconsin and Shane Beamer at South Carolina, but a Power Four win over the other prominent conference, even if a bottom dweller, could be what saves one coach and costs the other his job.
Maryland vs. Arkansas
Two low-level teams within the conference, but both have shown high-powered offense. Maryland's Malik Washington is a prolific playmaker who makes defenses' lives difficult with his ability to extend plays, get outside of the pocket, and deliver with authority. Arkansas will have a new look this season after hiring Ryan Silverfield from Memphis, but the Razorbacks have been known for their offensive success recently. This should be another offensive game that results in a lot of points.
