Spring practice is in the books as the Alabama Crimson Tide football squad sets their sights on off-season workouts, fall practice and the 2019 regular season.

During this week's "Capstone Report with DC" portion of The Blitz, former Alabama fullback Martin Houston and Alabama football observer DC from Golden Shores Productions.

In addition to the talent on offense returning for another season, the progress of the defensive back field has DC excited for the 2019 season.

"I'm most excited about our defensive backs. I think our defensive backs did a great job against the best wide receivers in the nation, Jerry Jeudy. DeVonta Smith and Henry Ruggs." DC said.

Specifically, the Alabama football observer noted cornerback Trevon Diggs as a player that has made significant progress this spring.

"Watching Trevon Diggs, he is at a different level. Last year he was playing the man when he played. He used his time and offseason while he was injured to really learn. He didn't regress, he's progressed." DC said.

One of the examples he cited in Diggs's improvement from last season involved how the senior cornerback blanketed Jerry Jeudy in the A-Day game.

"I watched him several times make adjustments to cut Jerry Jeudy off from making a play and jam Henry Ruggs at the line." DC said.

During the back half of spring practice, Pinson, Alabama's DJ Dale gained increased attention from coaches, players and reporters. He also caught DC's eye during Saturday's A-Day game.

"I thought DJ Dale was the real deal. He clogged up the middle to stop the run several times. We ran some very vanilla runs up the middle and he was there each time to stop." DC said.

On the down side, the overall quality of the second team defense also caught DC's attention during Saturday's A-Day game..

"I think the most disappointing thing for me was just strictly that the second team defense is so far behind the second team offense. I think that in itself shows what Coach Saban has said, what I've said on your show, what you've (Martin Houston) said that one thing we're worried about is defensive depth." DC said. "I know we've got some good, strong defensive players coming in the fall, but allowing the freshman to fill the gaps we've got right now is scary for me."

In their conversation, find out what Martin Houston and DC had to say about A-Day MVP John Metchie, the progress of Chadarius Townsend, Steve Sarkisian's emphasis on quick passes in the offense and concerns for potential injuries in the linebacking corps.
