Alabama redshirt junior forward Carl Engstrom has decided to depart the men’s basketball program, Crimson Tide head coach Anthony Grant announced on Tuesday. Engstrom, a native of Ystad, Sweden, will pursue professional playing options in Europe.

“It was great to have Carl as part of our team the past four years,” Grant said. “He has been a great example as a teammate and student-athlete. We certainly wish him the best of luck as he continues his basketball career.”

As a fourth-year junior, Engstrom, who suffered a season-ending knee injury just six games into the 2012-13 campaign, returned to the Alabama lineup this year. He played in 31 of the team’s 32 games this season, making 10 starts, and finished with averages of 1.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 11.8 minutes per game. Nine of his 10 starts came in SEC play.

Engstrom will graduate this May with a degree in general health studies.

“After talking with coach Grant and my family, I decided it was in my best interest to move on,” Engstrom said. “I am thankful for my time here at Alabama. It is a great university and I am so happy to earn a degree from here. I also would like to thank my teammates, coaches, staff and all the Bama fans for supporting me during my career.”
