CFP Executives Changing Format for 2025 Season
Another change is set to take place for the college football postseason. Executives from the College Football Playoff are expected to vote today on a "straight seeding" model for the 2025 postseason, compared to the 2024 model, in which conference champions got automatic bids into the playoff and byes into the quarterfinals.

Now, the format is set to change once again.
The straight seeding format would give byes to the top four teams as ranked by the College Football Playoff committee. Using last year's rankings, both Texas and Penn State would have earned byes in the CFP, instead of Boise State and Arizona State.
The Playoff format change comes in the last year of the current 12-team model, with executives looking to expand the format to 16 teams beginning in the 2026 season. It would mark the fourth different format in the last four years of the College Football Playoff.
In the current straight-seeding model, Alabama still would have missed the Playoffs due to the automatic bids for the five highest-ranked conference champions, with the Tide getting bumped in favor of the ACC Champion Clemson Tigers.
If the Playoff committee chooses to change the format, Alabama will need to be ranked inside the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings, regardless of winning the SEC.
