College Football Playoff Extends Current 12-Team Format Through 2026-27 Postseason
On Friday, the College Football Playoff management committee revealed that the current 12-team format for the postseason has been extended through the 2026-27 season, amid conversations about playoff expansion.

The management committee, which comprises the 10 FBS conference commissioners and Notre Dame's Athletic Director, said in the announcement that the decision to remain at 12 teams for the College Football Playoff provides "additional time for evaluation and discussion on the current format and potential changes in the future."
The selection process won't change for the 2026-27 College Football Playoff, with the five highest-ranked conference champions earning automatic bids in the playoff, and the four highest seeds, regardless of conference affiliation, earning byes through the first round of the College Football Playoff. One small tweak is that if Notre Dame is ranked inside the top 12 in the final playoff rankings, then the Fighting Irish will be "guaranteed" a playoff spot and can not be jumped by another team.
“After ongoing discussion about the 12-team playoff format, the decision was made to continue with the current structure,” Rich Clark, Executive Director of the College Football Playoff, said in a statement. “This will give the Management Committee additional time to review the 12-team format, so they can better assess the need for potential change. While they all agree the current format has brought more excitement to college football and has given more schools a real shot in the postseason, another year of evaluation will be helpful.”
The SEC and the Big Ten have been at a crossroads regarding expansion, with reports earlier in the week stating that the SEC wants to expand to 16 teams, while the Big Ten is pushing for a 24-team playoff model. Later reports indicated that the SEC would rather remain at 12 teams for the playoff than expand to 24 teams.
By extending the current playoff format, it gives the SEC and the Big Ten more time to deliberate on how each conference can benefit from a new playoff model, while giving decision makers more data points (to use the selection committee's terminology) regarding the 12-team model.
