Curley Hallman Assesses A-Day and Spring Practice

Spring practice is in the books in Tuscaloosa as Alabama football looks ahead to the eventual start of season number 13 of the Nick Saban Era.

Earlier this week, former LSU and Southern Miss head football coach Curley Hallman provided his analysis of Saturday's A-Day game and the road ahead in the off-season for Alabama football on Inside the Locker Room.

While junior Tua Tagovailoa is on track for his second season as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback, Curley Hallman cited two reasons why Mac Jones appears to be the favorite to be Tua's backup.

"He has improved his delivery. You can see his confidence is better, made a lot of nice, short throws." Hallman said. "Still it sometimes looks like to me, his body starts stressing. I don't know if it's the short delivery. Confidence wise, you'd have to say he is the number two."

In the post-game press conference following the A-Day game, Nick Saban discussed the anxiety concerning the A-Day debuts for Taulia Tagovailoa and Paul Tyson coming from the high school ranks. Specific to Tyson, the former LSU head coach described how a coach can help a young quarterback work through these type of issues.

"It goes back to if you do it long enough and you really concentrate working on it, things becomes second nature. There's an example of a young player of him being a quarterback, there's a lot on him. He needs a lot of reps. It becomes second nature. When he sees it, he does it and you react to it. Probably one of the most important coaching points for any athlete is trust your eyes. Let your body react to what your eyes see and the confidence level develops." Hallman said.

Hallman also examined the work that the new assistants and players will put forth in the off-season and Jalen Hurts's performance in Oklahoma's spring game.
