The Alabama baseball team suffered a tough, 9-5, loss to in-state foe North Alabama on Wednesday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

“UNA really came in here and took it to us,” said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. “It was really a bad loss for us [and] we really didn’t do anything well enough to win.”

Alabama freshman pitcher Ben Hess (0-1) earned his first collegiate start and the Lions jumped on him early, hitting three doubles in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Jacob McNairy came in to pitch in the second inning, but the Lions continued to pour it on, hitting a 3-run homerun in the frame.

Alabama saw its first run come in the bottom of the second inning as Owen Diodati hit a solo home-run out to center field, cutting the Lions lead to 5-1.

After another UNA run in the top of the third, the Tide would yet again respond as Jim Jarvis blasted a solo home-run to right field in the bottom of the inning.

The Lions put up another run in the fifth and the Tide responded once again as Zane Denton hit a solo home-run to right field, cutting the lead to 7-3.

The top of the seventh proved to be trouble for the Tide as the Lions loaded the bases with no outs. UNA scratched two more runs on the board, going up 9-3.

Alabama showed some fight at the end of the game as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with only one out. The Tide were able to scratch two more runs on the board, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit.

Alabama (9-5) looks to bounce back on Friday as they host Binghamton in a three-game series at home this weekend.
