Mbakwe, a 6-foot, 188-pound wide receiver from Clay Chalkville High School in Alabama, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He was originally rated as a five-star athlete coming out of high school, leading Clay Chalkville to a state championship as a quarterback. When he arrived in Tuscaloosa as a freshman, he played defensive back for the Crimson Tide. As a freshman in 2024, Mbakwe saw action in 12 games for Alabama, totaling 15 tackles, one tackle for loss, two pass breakups, and one interception.

Mbakwe originally entered his name into the transfer portal after his freshman season before Alabama converted him to his preferred position of wide receiver, where he saw action in 10 games on offense and special teams. Mbakwe caught three passes for 55 yards and had one rush for four yards with the Crimson Tide as a sophomore.

He originally told reporters he was not going to transfer in an interview he did with Austin Duncan.

He is the third Alabama receiver to enter the transfer portal, joining Aeryn "Bubba" Hampton and Jalen Hale. He marks the fifth transfer for Alabama, joining Hampton, Hale, offensive lineman Roq Montgomery, and running back Richard Young.

The transfer portal officially opened on Friday, January 2, and will remain open for 15 days.
