Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is listed as doubtful for the New England Patriots' game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon.

The decision of doubtful is one step up from where he was a week ago as he was listed as inactive on last Friday's injury report for the Week 4 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Jones suffered a high ankle sprain in the Patriots' game against the Baltimore Ravens twelve days ago late in the fourth quarter, when Ravens defender Calais Campbell tackled Jones on his third interception of that game.

Although he is expected to be out, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick gave a little glimmer of hope on Jones' recovery.

"He's a lot closer than he was last Friday. We'll see how it goes," said Belichick.

The former national champion has been seen practicing multiple times this week.

Rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe is expected to get the start on Sunday afternoon. Zappe made his NFL debut last Sunday, where he went 10-of-15 for 99 yards and one touchdown in the Patriots' 27-24 overtime loss to the Packers.

The Patriots sit at 1-3 and No. 4 in the AFC East.

The Patriots play the Detroit Lions on Sunday, October 9, 2022, on CBS at noon CT. Check your local listings to determine if the game is on in your area.
