Nick Saban Street Coming Soon?
When Nick Saban retired in January 2024, the former Crimson Tide head coach moved into the next phase of his life as an ambassador for the University of Alabama and College Football analyst on ESPN's College Gameday.
Saban won an ESPY for being an Icon, and the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium was named after him as well. Saban is an absolute guarantee for the College Football Hall of Fame as well when the time comes for that accolade.
It's the tradition in Tuscaloosa for national championship-winning coaches to have a street named after them. Gene Stallings Avenue and Paul W Bryant Drive line the roads around Bryant-Denny Stadium. Wallace Wade Avenue, Frank Thomas Avenue, and Harold "Red" Drew also have streets on the University of Alabama's campus.
Could Nick Saban Street be coming soon?
Matt Stahl of AL.com interviewed Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, where Maddox said, "Eventually there will be an honoring of coach Saban, at the appropriate time."
Maddox and the city of Tuscaloosa are still working closely with the Saban family on the Saban Center, which is set to be a hub for STEM and arts education in Tuscaloosa.
"We’re working closely with them on the Saban Center, which is going to be, it’s an extraordinary project for the city,” Maddox told Stahl. “But there will be, at the appropriate time. And certainly, we’ll want to work with him and his family on that, they’ve meant so much to Tuscaloosa.”
In 2021, the city of Tuscaloosa named the previously called 28th Street "Nick's Kids Avenue", honoring the charitable foundation run by the Saban Family.
Saban retired with six national championships won at the University of Alabama, and nine SEC Championships. He retired following his ninth at Alabama and another College Football Playoff appearance in 2023.
