Alabama Head Coach Nate Oats said in his conference call with the media this week that he is expecting Kira Lewis Jr. and John Petty Jr. to enter their names into the NBA Draft. Today Petty Jr. confirmed those intentions on social media.
Petty Jr. will not hire an agent so he is eligible to decide to return to Alabama, he is projected to be on the fringe of a second round. The junior shooting guard averaged 14.5 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game and shot 44% from the 3-point line this past year. Petty was second the SEC in 3-pointers made and in 3-point shooting percentage.
Petty Jr. earned Second-team All-SEC in 2020 for Alabama. He scored a career high 39 points against Samford this season, one of two games he made 10, 3-point shots.
Petty was a five-star recruit according to ESPN out of Jemison High School in Hunstville Alabama. He was a two time winner of the Mr. Basketball award in the state of Alabama and won three consecutive 5A state championships.
June 10, 2020 is the deadline for Petty Jr. to decide if he will stay in the NBA Draft or withdraw his name and return to school should the NBA schedule not change due to the COVID-19 coronavirus and he decide to go through the entire process without an agent.
