Dilfer will return to UAB for his third season as the head coach of the Blazers. Dilfer has a 7-17 record through his first two seasons as UAB's head coach and finished with a 3-9 record in the 2024 season. UAB was 2-6 in conference play this season as a member of the American Athletic Conference.

UAB Athletic Director Mark Ingram cited Dilfer's football IQ, dedication, and commitment to UAB behind the decision to retain Dilfer for a third season.

"I support Coach Dilfer and the team, and I will do everything I can to help them compete for bowl eligibility and championships in The American and beyond," Ingram said in a statement.

UAB and Ingram released an official statement on the retention of Dilfer, "Our last two football seasons have not met UAB's standards of excellence in the least, and nobody - especially Coach Dilfer and myself - think that's ok," Ingram wrote. "However, in his short time as a Blazer, Coach Dilfer has demonstrated tireless work ethic - both on and off the field - to make a positive impact at UAB and on the Birmingham community."

Dilfer was hired as the head coach at UAB in 2022, following a 7-6 season by the Blazers led by interim head coach Bryant Vincent. Bill Clark resigned before the start of the 2022 season, citing health reasons, after leading UAB to a 43-20 record after the school took a two-year hiatus from football.
