The University of Alabama in Birmingham football team just completed its 2022 football season with a 37-27 victory over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. The Blazers were led by interim head football coach Bryant Vincent, who was thrust into the head coaching position in June after Bill Clark stepped down due to health issues.

Vincent led the Blazers to a 6-6 record after spending the previous five seasons as Clark's offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach. UAB lost five of its games by one score and its sixth loss was against SEC West Champion LSU. The Blazers will head to The HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl against Miami of Ohio on Dec. 16.

There was a groundswell of support for Vincent to be named the permanent head coach from the players in the program, however it appears the UAB administration has chosen to go in a very different direction.

According to Pete Thamel of ESPN the UAB Blazers are expected to hire Trent Dilfer as its next head coach.

Dilfer is a a California-native who played college football at Fresno State, he became a Tampa Bay Buccaneers first round pick in 1994 and played 13 years in the NFL, winning one Super Bowl as a starting quarterback.

After retiring in 2008 he began a stint working for ESPN breaking down football.

He's gotten into coaching at Lipscomb Academy in 2019 in Nashville, Tennessee. He's taken his program to three state championships in four years, winning one and losing another and has yet to play the third. Dilfer's also become one of the lead coaches for Elite 11, the notorious high school quarterback camp.

Dilfer has no college coaching experience but comes to a Blazers program with high expectations. UAB has gone to five bowl games in the six seasons since its return to football, COVID-19 preventing that record from being spotless.

The hire is unconventional but he does have a head coaching record of 42-10 in Division II in Tennessee. Time will tell if Dilfer can transition to college and uphold the Blazers proud tradition.
