Alex McGough Shines, But Will it Affect J’Mar Smith’s Position?
The Birmingham Stallions had a successful season opener Saturday night as they defeated the New Jersey Generals 27-10.
Alex McGough came in for J'Mar Smith as he suffered an injury to his non-throwing hand with 10 seconds left in the first half. McGough immediately threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jace Sternberger right after on his first play of the season to give the Stallions a 17-10 lead.
McGough made a huge play in the third quarter with a 29-yard rushing touchdown to extend the Stallions' lead to 24-10.
McGough continued to outplay Smith throughout the rest of the game. Even though Smith had an impressive 61-yard touchdown pass to Austin Watkins in the Stallions' very first play of the season, he started to become inconsistent with his throws and even threw an interception in the second quarter.
Smith's inconsistency tended to hold back the Stallions last season and might've contributed to their only loss against the Houston Gamblers. If Smith wants to continue to be the Stallions' starting quarterback for the rest of the season, he must not make too many mistakes throwing the ball. He must also improve his rushing ability to compete with his backup.
