How Keith Askins and the Miami Heat Recognize Talent
Former Alabama basketball player Keith Askins spoke recently on his experiences recruiting players for the Miami Heat.
Askins discussed the topic Wednesday on "Inside the Locker Room" hosted by Wimp and Barry Sanderson.
Barry Sanderson asked Askins about the Heat's process of recruiting. "You guys find who you like and you go get them...and they end up being better than you thought they'd be."
Askins said the main thing that helps is extensive research. "Everyone's got a kid that's put on your radar," he said. "There'll be a ton of reports on him...we just try to find out everything about the kid."
"What'd you guys see in Tyler Herro?" asked Barry Sanderson. Herro was a first round draft pick for the Miami Heat in 2019.
"Tyler's just an elite shooter," said Askins, "he's very confident with his skill set." Askins noted that putting in the work is what makes Herro a successful basketball player.
"He's a guy that doesn't back down from any challenge," said Askins. "He's one of the best scorers in the league."
Askins spoke on the enjoyment that comes from watching a player develop on and off the court. "Our goal is to put kids in a position to succeed," he said.
However Askins emphasized that success requires work from the players. "Any time you sign a player, he has to pull the rope just as much as the organization."
