J'Mar Smith was one of the biggest factors in the Birmingham Stallions' 2022 USFL championship season. He may have to give this season or at least the majority of it a rest, however, as he was placed on the Stallions' injured reserve list last night.

Smith injured his left ring finger last Saturday late in the second quarter of the Stallions' 27-10 victory against the New Jersey Generals. Alex McGough would then take over the game with a touchdown pass in the last play of the second quarter, as well as a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

This might not be a huge loss for the Stallions, as McGough is a very athletic quarterback with quick speed and an accurate arm that he showed last Saturday.

Believe it or not, McGough was actually in the same position that Smith is currently in last season. He was expected to be the starting quarterback for all season that year, until he got injured against the Generals in that opening weekend. Smith would then come in clutch with a rushing touchdown with less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter for the win, earning him the starting job for the majority of that season.

Now it's vice versa, as McGough will likely control the destiny for the Stallions' possible repeat title season. Fans should have confidence for him as he has the talents and skills like Smith to do so.

McGough's first start of the season will be this Saturday, when the Stallions take on the Memphis Showboats at home in Protective Stadium at 6 p.m. CST on FOX.
