The Crimson Tide has had three Broyles Award winners, with then-defensive coordinator and now Georgia head coach Kirby Smart winning it in 2009. Alabama won an undefeated national championship that season, defeating Florida in the SEC Championship and Texas in the BCS National Championship.

In 2018, then-Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley won the award, leading an Alabama passing offense that took college football by storm with Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback and Henry Ruggs III, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle at wide receiver. Locksley is now the head coach of the Maryland Terrapins.

In 2020, then-Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian won the award, helping lead Alabama to an undefeated national championship season, defeating Florida in the SEC Championship, Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl, and Ohio State in the CFP National Championship. Sarkisian also stepped in as the Crimson Tide's acting head coach during the Iron Bowl after Alabama head coach Nick Saban contracted COVID-19. Sarkisian is now the head coach for the Texas Longhorns.

Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack joined the Crimson Tide two seasons ago after spending two years as the head coach at the University of South Alabama. Wommack helped lead Alabama's defense to a top-ten ranking last season and has the Tide's defense playing at a top-ten level again this season, averaging 16.2 points per game allowed.

Kane Wommack has been linked to the open head coaching job at Arkansas, where he played for the Razorbacks from 2005-2006. Wommack's defense will face a tough test on Saturday, taking on the Auburn Tigers in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
