College football received some unexpected and surprising news on Wednesday when reports broke that Bob Stoops planned to retire as Oklahoma head coach.

NewsOK and later Bruce Feldman both reported the story on Twitter and said that offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley is expected to take over as head coach. Stoops is one of just two college football head coaches that began their current position before the 2000 season. The 56-year-old took over the Sooners' program in 1999 after spending four years as an assistant under Steve Spurrier at Florida.

Stoops has averaged more than 10 wins throughout his 18-year career in Norman and trails only Ohio State's Urban Meyer and Washington's Chris Petersen in winning percentage by active coaches.

While he often took shots at the Southeastern Conference, Stoops backed it up by carrying the torch for the Big XII. He's won 10 conference championships and one national championship at Oklahoma and, if the reports hold true, finished his career by beating SEC West power Auburn in the Sugar Bowl.
