Alabama Hires Second FBS Head Coach as Assistant
Alabama continues to fill out its defensive staff with hires that have SEC experience.
Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer brought most of his staff from Washington with him to Alabama. However, he has opted to bring in coaches with SEC experience on the defensive side of the ball.
In addition to former South Alabama Jaguars head coach Kane Wommack as the defensive coordinator, Alabama is set to hire Buffalo head coach Maurice Linguist as a defensive assistant who is likely to work with the secondary according to Adam Rittenberg and Chris Low of ESPN.
According to Pete Thamel, Coach Linguist is expected to serve as the Co-DC for Alabama and coach the entire secondary.
Linguist has SEC experience, similar to Wommack. He was a safeties coach at Mississippi State in 2016 and a cornerbacks coach at Texas A&M from 2018 to 2019. Linguist also played safety during his time at Baylor.
Linguist is the second FBS head coach that new Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer has hired to become an assistant on his staff following the retirement of former Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban.
DeBoer's offense features several Washington ties, while his defense boasts SEC experience. Freddie Roach, Kane Wommack, and now Maurice Linguist all boast time in the SEC as recruiters and coaches. It's evident Coach DeBoer does not want to lose recruiting in the southeast.
The initial Crimson Tide coaching staff for Coach DeBoer is beginning to come together. It currently looks like this:
HC: Kalen DeBoer
OC: Ryan Grubb
WR: JaMarcus Shephard
OL: Scott Huff
TE: Nick Sheridan
Co-DC: Kane Wommack
DL: Freddie Roach
Co-DC / DB: Maurice Linguist
Trainer: Jeff Allen
S&C: David Ballou
General manager: Courtney Morgan
