The Crimson Tide had won every game by 16 points or more in 2011, except one. November 5, 2011 Alabama lost 9-6 to LSU in overtime in Bryant-Denny stadium. The Crimson Tide was fortunate the rest of the country's top teams lost at the right time and the rematch with the Bayou Bengals was set.
Nick Saban led AJ McCarron, Trent Richardson and Dont'a Hightower into the Super Dome in New Orleans dead set on redemption. The Tide rolled over the Tigers 21-0 in one of the most physical defensive efforts Alabama has had under Saban.
Alabama's defense held LSU to 39 rushing yards and under 100 total yards in the contest and forced two turnovers to continually put the Tide offense in positive situations. LSU was able to cross the 50-yard line only one time in the game.
Hightower and Courtney Upshaw both got a sack in the game and Hightower forced a fumble, Upshaw was the Tide's leading tackler in the game with seven.
Junior kicker Jeremy Shelley converted on 5/7 field goals to put the Tide ahead 15-0 heading into the fourth quarter and running back Trent Richardson took his final carry for the Crimson Tide for a 34-yard touchdown run to clinch the victory.
It was LSU's first loss in New Orleans since the 1987 Sugar Bowl. In the end the Tide secured coach Saban's second national title in three seasons at Alabama.
